Which side of the line are you on?

Because the city spans two counties, the ZIP code alone won't settle it. If you're not sure which county your home is in, City Hall at 704-734-0333 can tell you. The answer matters because Gaston County's recycling centers are for Gaston County residents only.

In the Gaston portion, two county convenience sites are open to you: the Tryon Recycling Center at 2755 Tryon Courthouse Road in Bessemer City and the Crowders Creek Recycling Center at 1120 C P Groves Road in Gastonia. On the Cleveland County side, start with the city's curbside pickup and ask Cleveland County about its own sites. We haven't verified Cleveland County's options, so we don't list them.

The city's curbside bulky pickup

The City of Kings Mountain collects bulky household waste at the curb: furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, tires without rims and cardboard boxes. The cost goes on your monthly utility bill. The amount sits on a separate city fee schedule we haven't confirmed, so ask City Hall for the current figure.

Set items out no earlier than the day before your rollout-cart day, which falls Monday through Thursday depending on your route. Keep everything in one pile no larger than 5 feet wide, deep or high, and off the street and sidewalk. Refrigerators and other appliances that contain gas need the refrigerant removed and tagged by a qualified person, with the doors taken off or strapped shut. Building materials, batteries, paint cans, hazardous or medical waste and stumps are not collected.

When the pile outgrows a five-foot cube

A pile 5 feet on every side holds about 4.6 cubic yards. That is a little more than a quarter of the 14 to 18 cubic yard trucks most Charlotte-area junk removal companies price by. In published prices from Charlotte-area companies (October 2026), a quarter truck had a median of about $241, and a half truck about $431. Those are reference figures, not a promise from anyone.

A hauler also fills the gaps in the city's service. Remodeling scraps are excluded from curb pickup, and a refrigerator has to have its refrigerant removed and tagged before the city will take it. If you hire out a fridge, ask whether refrigerant handling is included or billed separately; one published local fee was $40. See appliance removal and construction debris removal for what to ask.

Where a load from Kings Mountain can go

Ask any company where it takes what it hauls. Usable furniture may suit the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 1840 E Franklin Blvd in Gastonia, which schedules free pickup of large items. The Gaston County Landfill in Dallas posts $46 per ton for construction debris and a separate out-of-county rate of $60 per ton, both with a half-ton minimum.

Paint and chemicals are their own case. The county's household hazardous waste events in Dallas are for Gaston County residents only, and the city leaves paint cans out of curb pickup. If you live in the Gaston portion, our Where to take it guide covers the county sites.

Kings Mountain's own bulk pickup

The City of Kings Mountain collects bulky household waste at the curb (furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, tires without rims, cardboard boxes) and adds the cost to your monthly utility bill. Set items out no earlier than the day before your rollout-cart day, in one pile no larger than 5 feet in any direction, off the street and sidewalk. Gas-containing appliances need refrigerant removed and tagged. Building materials, batteries, paint cans, hazardous waste and stumps are excluded. City Hall: 704-734-0333.

Kings Mountain junk removal questions

Can I use Gaston County recycling centers if I live in Kings Mountain?
Only if your home is in the Gaston County portion of the city. The county's convenience sites, including Tryon and Crowders Creek, serve Gaston County residents only. Most of Kings Mountain lies in Cleveland County, so confirm your county before you load the truck. City Hall at 704-734-0333 can help you check.
How much does junk removal cost in Kings Mountain?
Published prices from Charlotte-area companies (October 2026) put the median minimum charge near $108 and the median full truck near $700. Your price depends on volume, weight, stairs and items like refrigerators or mattresses. Ask each company for a written price, and check that its service area includes your side of the county line.
What won't the city's bulky pickup take?
Building materials, batteries, paint cans, hazardous or medical waste and stumps are excluded. Your pile must fit within 5 feet in every direction and stay off the street and sidewalk. Appliances that contain gas need their refrigerant removed and tagged by a qualified person first, with doors removed or strapped.
Does the city charge for bulky item pickup?
Yes. The cost is added to your monthly utility bill. The amount is on a separate city fee schedule that we have not confirmed, so we don't print a number here. Call City Hall at 704-734-0333 for the current rate and your collection day, which follows your rollout-cart route, Monday through Thursday.
