What construction debris removal covers
This covers leftovers from remodels and small demolition: drywall and sheetrock, carpet and pad, laminate, vinyl and hardwood flooring, cabinets, countertops, lumber and trim, doors, old windows, toilets and sinks. Haulers load it from the gutted room or the driveway pile. Heavier material such as concrete, brick, tile and shingles is a separate conversation. Mention stone countertops or a cast iron tub when you call, since either one changes the job.
Gaston County's convenience sites do not accept construction and demolition debris. Wood, carpet and other C&D has to go to the county landfill at 3155 Philadelphia Church Road in Dallas, which charges by the ton.
Why heavy debris is priced differently
Household junk is priced by volume. Dense material is not, because a truck can hit its weight limit long before it looks full. One Charlotte-area company states its truck carries about 4,000 pounds, so a quarter load of concrete weighs roughly a thousand. Several local companies price heavy material by weight but do not publish a rate.
The published figures that do exist give a sense of scale: $219 for a quarter truck of concrete or masonry on one Charlotte-area price list, and $54 per ton over an included 1.5 tons from a Raleigh company. Ask how your load will be priced, and whether there is a weight limit, before the first armload goes on.
For perspective, the county landfill charges $46 per ton for C&D. On most loads, the bigger share of a hauler's price is labor, the truck and the trip, not the tipping fee.
Town pickup and reuse for small projects
A small DIY project may fit your town's pickup. Gastonia's weekly bulky collection takes sheetrock and insulation if bagged and carpet cut to 4-foot lengths, rolled and tied, but no dirt, rocks, concrete or ceramic tile. Belmont's bulk collection excludes C&D debris, Cramerton refuses contractor debris, and Lowell's bulk week is not for renovation remnants.
Good leftovers can be donated. The Habitat ReStore in Gastonia takes doors, new uninstalled windows, full-sheet plywood, lumber 5 feet or longer, and new sealed-box flooring. For a garage that mixes debris with everything else, see garage cleanouts. The disposal guide covers the landfill.
Ask before you book
- Is debris priced by volume, by weight, or both?
- Is there a weight limit per load, and what happens if I go over it?
- Do you take concrete, brick, tile or shingles?
- Does the price include loading from inside, or only from a driveway pile?
- Will reusable materials go to donation?

Construction Debris Removal questions
- How much does construction debris removal cost?
- Published starting prices from companies serving the Charlotte area (October 2026) run $208 to $405 for a construction debris job, and one Charlotte-area price list shows $219 for a quarter truck of concrete or masonry. Heavy material is often priced by weight. These are published figures, not quotes, so describe the material and the amount when you ask.
- Can I take drywall and carpet to a county recycling center?
- No. Gaston County convenience sites do not accept construction and demolition debris such as wood and carpet. It goes to the county landfill in Dallas, which charges $46 per ton with a half-ton minimum of $23. Loads must be covered and secured, or the landfill adds a $200 surcharge on top of the disposal fee.
- Does Gastonia's curbside pickup take renovation debris?
- A small amount, with prep. The city's weekly collection of large items asks you to bag sheetrock and insulation and to cut carpet into 4-foot lengths, rolled and tied. It does not take dirt, rocks, concrete or ceramic tile. That suits a bathroom refresh. A full kitchen tear-out is usually a hauler or landfill job.
- Why do some haulers limit how much concrete they load?
- Weight. A junk truck can only carry so much, and concrete, brick and dirt reach that limit fast. Some national companies cap dense loads at about one foot deep in the truck, and several local companies switch to weight-based pricing for this material. Ask about limits before you book so the job is not cut short.
