What mattress removal covers
This covers the whole bed: mattresses of any size, box springs and foundations, metal and wood frames, headboards, bunk beds, futon mattresses, daybeds and crib mattresses. Ask for the frame and headboard to be included in the same price. The hard part is usually the stairs, where a queen bends around the landing and a king may not bend at all.
Charlotte-area price sheets mostly treat a mattress as a single item, with published prices from $82 to $160 depending on size and whether a box spring comes along. Some companies add a $25 mattress fee on top of their item or load price, so ask whether it is already counted.
No recycling program here, so plan around that
We found no mattress recycling program in Gaston County, and North Carolina has no state program either. The county treats mattresses as a disposal item at its convenience sites, and the Habitat ReStore does not accept mattresses or box springs. A used mattress here is usually headed for disposal, whoever carries it out.
The frame is a different story. A solid wood frame or headboard in good shape may suit a donation center, and a metal frame can go to scrap metal at a county convenience site. If a new bed is on the way, ask the store delivering it whether it takes the old mattress and what that costs. Compare its answer with a hauler's price and the county's $10 fee before you decide.
Curbside pickup in some towns
Several towns collect mattresses. Lowell takes mattresses and springs free during its monthly bulk week. Belmont's quarterly bulk collection includes them. Mount Holly picks them up with a purchased sticker: $20 for a mattress and $5 for a box spring. Kings Mountain collects mattresses and box springs curbside and adds the cost to the utility bill.
If you can get the mattress to the curb on the right day, the town is usually the cheaper route. If it is upstairs, or several beds are going at once, compare the companies listed here. Town details are on the Lowell and Kings Mountain pages.
Ask before you book
- Is there a separate mattress or box spring fee?
- Does the price change with the mattress size?
- Will you take the frame and headboard on the same trip?
- Where does the mattress end up?
- Is curbside pickup cheaper than carrying it from an upstairs bedroom?
The do-it-yourself route in Gaston County
Gaston County convenience sites at Tryon, Riverbend, Crowders Creek and Hardin take mattresses and box springs for 2 GarbCards ($10) each. Buy GarbCards ahead, since the sites accept no cash. The county lists mattresses as a disposal item, not a recyclable, and the Habitat ReStore does not take mattresses or box springs. Mattress Removal questions
- How much does mattress removal cost near Gastonia?
- Published prices from Charlotte-area companies (October 2026) run $82 to $160 for a mattress pickup, depending on size and whether a box spring is included. A box spring alone is listed at $29 to $92. These are published figures, not quotes, and any company may price your job differently. The county convenience sites charge $10 per piece if you haul it yourself.
- Can I donate a used mattress?
- Usually not in Gaston County. The Habitat ReStore in Gastonia does not accept mattresses, box springs or sleeper sofas, and the county lists mattresses as a disposal item rather than a recyclable. A clean, sturdy bed frame or headboard is much easier to place. Call ahead before you load a mattress for any charity drop-off.
- Where can I drop off a mattress myself?
- Four county convenience sites take them: Tryon in Bessemer City, Riverbend in Mount Holly, Crowders Creek in Gastonia and Hardin at the landfill in Dallas. Each mattress or box spring costs 2 GarbCards ($10). Sites are open Monday to Saturday 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday 1 PM to 5:30 PM. The disposal guide has addresses.
- Does Mount Holly pick up mattresses?
- Yes, with a sticker. Pay $20 for a mattress or $5 for a box spring at the Municipal Complex by cash, check or money order. You get an orange sticker to put on the item, then set it at the curb on your regular garbage day. Only stickered items are collected, so buy the sticker before pickup day.
